Laura de Lange

Laura “Oxfam has always been an organization that speaks to me because it tackles so many aspects of global issues. This is also something I hope to learn during my internship, to directly see from the perspective of a NGO that global issues are not black and white, but more holistic.

My name is Laura de Lange, and I am interning at the Gender Justice department where I will learn about fundraising and women’s rights. Currently I am a master student in International Relations at Leiden University, where I only have to finish my master thesis and hopefully be done around December or January. In my masters, you can choose to do an internship as an elective. Because I wanted to gain some work-experience in the field of NGOs to really know if I want to work at such an organization when I am graduated. During my bachelors, I also interned at another NGO with a main focus on gender equality and women’s rights in New York City, but I think that an organization in the Netherlands will give me some new insights as well.

Oxfam has always been an organization that speaks to me because it tackles so many aspects of global issues. This is also something I hope to learn during my internship, to directly see from the perspective of a NGO that global issues are not black and white but more holistic. Moreover, since I will be focusing on fundraising and women’s rights I hope to learn new strategies to apply for the fundraising planning for Oxfam Novib regarding women’s rights and gender equality. My dream is still to work for an organization that is really to bring some good to the world. But to fulfil this dream I need to pursue another dream as well, to travel the world, to see the people that need help and to really see for whom I will be fighting for the make the world a better place.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you’d grow up?
When I was twelve years old we had to write down a top 5 of what we wanted to be when we grow up. Funny thing was that my number one was: to be a director of a NGO. Maybe a bit ambitious for such a young age, but maybe a bit more realistic than my other options to be an actress, model, singer or princess. To be a director of a NGO might be a long road to travel and maybe not the road I end up traveling, but I know that I want to work with people and work for people who live in circumstances beyond their control and may not have a voice to do something about it.
